Foundation Study Program

Text of Study
The New Heart of Wisdom

Teacher
Gen Kelsang Tangpa

Location
Mahamudra Kadampa Buddhist Center
500 6th St
Hermosa Beach, CA  90254

The purpose of the Foundation Program (FP) is:

To provide a systematic presentation of particular subjects of Mahayana Buddhism to enable practitioners to deepen their knowledge and experience of Buddhism.

Foundation Program is for students that have a deep appreciation for Buddha’s teachings having gained experience in the General Program Classes. When joining FP, you commit to completing the text that is being studied (or a section of the text if it is one of the longer ones). The length of the course will therefore depend on many factors, but we can say with confidence that “The New Heart of Wisdom” will likely take about 2 nine month terms to complete. The students make a commitment to complete one term.

The book “The New Heart of Wisdom” is a commentary to Buddha’s Heart Sutra. The Sutra explains Buddha’s wisdom teachings and how all phenomena are empty of inherent existence. Geshe-la says that the study of emptiness is the most meaningful thing we can do with our human life.

The Foundation Program has weekly reading assignments from the text. The class includes discussions and meditations on the week’s readings. We are required to memorize the condensed meaning of the commentary and the root text  ‘Essence of Wisdom Sutra’. We analyze the text word by word, paragraph by paragraph in order to gain a deep inner experience of the teachings.

Program Format
If you’ve been attending the General Program classes at the Mahamudra Kadampa Buddhist Center, or a branch location, joining the Foundation Program is the next step in deepening your practical experience of Buddha’s teachings. FP classes are similar in format and depth to college-level classes. The program is based on a systematic study of six Kadampa Buddhist texts written by NKT founder Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. These include: Joyful Path of Good Fortune, Universal Compassion, Eight Steps to Happiness, The New Heart of Wisdom, Meaningful to Behold, and How to Understand the Mind. Classes are taught by Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Tangpa.

These classes include: • Guided meditations • Commentary to the text by the teacher • Group discussion • Question & answer opportunities • The company of like-minded spiritual friends

“If we just dabble superficially in a spiritual path we will never gain a deep and stable experience, and our wisdom will never develop to its full potential.  This is why the spiritual programs offered by the New Kadampa Tradition are so important.”

~ Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
