How to Understand the Mind

Teacher
Gen Kelsang Tangpa

Location
Mahamudra Kadampa Buddhist Center
500 6th St
Hermosa Beach, CA  90254

The purpose of the Foundation Program (FP) is:

To provide a systematic presentation of particular subjects of Mahayana Buddhism to enable practitioners to deepen their knowledge and experience of Buddhism.

Foundation Program is for students that have a deep appreciation for Buddha’s teachings having gained experience in the General Program (GP) Classes. When joining FP, you commit to completing the text that is being studied (or a section of the text if it is one of the longer ones). The length of the course will therefore depend on many factors, but we can say with confidence that “How to Understand the Mind” will likely take about 2 nine month terms to complete. The students make a commitment to complete one term.

The book “How to Understand the Mind” offers deep insight into our mind, and shows how an understanding of its nature and functions can be used practically in everyday experience to improve our lives.  This beautiful text is a practical guide to developing and maintaining a light, positive mind – showing how to recognize and abandon states of mind that harm us, and to replace them with peaceful and beneficial ones.  In addition, it describes different types of mind in detail, revealing the depth and profundity of the Buddhist understanding of the mind.  It concludes with a detailed explanation of meditation, showing how by controlling and transforming our mind we can attain a lasting state of joy, independent of external conditions.

The Foundation Program has weekly reading assignments from the text. The class includes discussions and meditations on the week’s readings. Students are required to memorize the condensed meaning of the text.  As a class we analyze the text word by word, paragraph by paragraph in order to gain a deep inner experience of the teachings.

Program Format
If you’ve been attending the General Program classes at the Mahamudra Kadampa Buddhist Center, or a branch location, joining the Foundation Program is the next step in deepening your practical experience of Buddha’s teachings. FP classes are similar in format and depth to college-level classes. The program is based on a systematic study of six Kadampa Buddhist texts written by NKT founder Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. These include: Joyful Path of Good Fortune, Universal Compassion, Eight Steps to Happiness, The New Heart of Wisdom, Meaningful to Behold, and How to Understand the Mind. Classes are taught by Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Tangpa.

These classes include: • Guided meditations • Commentary to the text by the teacher • Group discussion • Question & answer opportunities • The company of like-minded spiritual friends

About the Program
The program comprises the following five subjects, based on Buddha’s Sutra teachings and the corresponding commentaries by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso:

  1. The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, based on the commentary Joyful Path of Good Fortune
  2. Training the Mind, based on the commentaries Universal Compassion and Eight Steps to Happiness
  3. The Heart Sutra, based on the commentary The New Heart of Wisdom
  4. Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, based on the commentary Meaningful to Behold

Cost: $125/month (12 months/year) includes these FP classes and unlimited GP classes.

*Note: FP is not a drop-in class and enrollment is required.  People are generally required to have attended GP (drop-in) classes for a minimum of 6-months before joining the Foundation Program.  If you are interested in joining, please email Gen Tangpa the Resident Teacher at rt@meditateinthesouthbay.org

“If we just dabble superficially in a spiritual path we will never gain a deep and stable experience, and our wisdom will never develop to its full potential.  This is why the spiritual programs offered by the New Kadampa Tradition are so important.”

~ Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

“We should study correctly and purely; our understanding should be qualified. If our understanding is qualified then our teachings will be very qualified and because we will be giving teachings from our heart students will receive powerful benefits.”
